Buzz grows in Dem circles over Kaine as Clinton VPBy Manu Raju and Deirdre Walsh, CNN

Washington (CNN)Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine is emerging as an early favorite to be Hillary Clinton's running mate among major Democratic donors, operatives and congressional Democrats, who argue the Spanish-speaking former governor could be a steady hand in a difficult election environment.
As the party establishment begins to shift its attention to a likely general election matchup against Donald Trump, many Democrats are now arguing that Kaine could help balance out the ticket by helping Clinton with independents in swing states and even expand the political map in the fall with his moderate profile, executive experience and foreign policy background.
And as a politician from a southern state who has endured tough elections, proponents believe he can handle the grind of a high-profile presidential campaign.

(10,826 posts)I really love the Sherrod Brown idea. But as with Elizabeth Warren for VP we'd be risking a safe seat. In addition, both Brown and Warren offer strong voices and votes where they're really needed. In the Senate.
That being said, I'm not a huge fan of a Kaine selection. Castro has less experience but he brings more genuine appeal.

Kaine doesn't serve any of that.

(297,029 posts)It's not going to be Tim Kaine.. I don't make predictions but I can do that.

(34,425 posts)He's not likely to offend many, but won't energize many, either, and may reassure some who want a white non Hispanic male on the ticket.

(5,044 posts)As much as I like Castro, he's got a glaring problem as he would be the least experienced VP of either party in the history of the US. The Mayor of San Antonio for five years before becoming the US Secretary of Housing for less than two years.

(83,710 posts)Yet look at Obama.

(5,044 posts)Now that Trump is the GOP nominee, all bets are off. He's got zero elected experience and his campaign accusing a woman and a minority as unqualified would only hurt him. Obama is the right comparison, the only thing is that PBO was a US Senator for nearly four years.
I dunno.. I trust our gal though!

(83,710 posts)What I see Castro bringing to the ticket, besides his intelligence , youth and street savvy? He is Latino and with Trump wanting to deport them all, I see Latinos flocking to our ticket. I see young people energized and voting in droves.
Actually, I see him as President after 8 years of Hillary.

(5,044 posts)I couldn't find a comparable comparison with any other previous vice president ever. That being said, a fellow DU'r did point out that President Obama resume was somewhat similar.
I really like Julian, but I need convincing.

(44,173 posts)Pick Castro or Xavier Becerra.
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)Xavier Becerra, although I like him a LOT, is from California and I'm pretty certain we have CA wrapped up.
What we're looking for is a VP candidate who can be president after Hillary's two terms, who is young enough to draw out the younger voters, and who can potentially deliver Texas to the Democratic Party in November. I believe Julian Castro is the right man for the job.

(2,897 posts)Plus, he does nothing for her. Oregon is reliably blue. Clinton would be best off looking for someone that can sure up a demographic or someone that can potentially bring a state.
One could make the argument that he could bring over Sander's supporters, but as vocal as Bernie or Bust is on here, it hasn't really shown up much in the polls.

(19,460 posts)He has said that he has a "faith based" opposition to abortions and would rather promote sex education in schools and adoption as an alternative but he is also not pro life. I believe he lost an election because of his stance on being pro choice. He worked hard for women's rights after the Hobby Lobby fiasco.
