(27,806 posts)DU is waking up a little, I think, though. Lots of people jumped on that (and the one a couple of days ago suggesting Bernie tried to end apartheid while Hillary failed single-handedly to stop it while she was First Lady of Arkansas).

I somehow missed that one. It was probably during one of my various self-imposed exiles from DU.
I'm not sure how many different ways something can be explained to someone, but DU tried them all in that thread. Too funny.

(27,806 posts)For one thing, you can actually already buy money orders at the Post Office and transact business through a P.O. box, so it's hardly even a reach.

Well Mr Progressive did protect big gun manufacturers from lawsuits and voted down the Brady bill 5 times, can't forget that crap.
...you and your followers just have to invent your progressive credentials.

(2,792 posts)Bernie has done a lot of harm to what is genuinely valuable about the progressive movement.
In my very humble opinion, Martin O'Malley, a life-long Democrat, was a better messenger for progressive ideas. He was not anger-driven.
But we go on, as best we can.
LisaM
(27,806 posts)I suppose he was always like that and we just never noticed it before. What I don't get is the total fanaticism of his supporters, who ignore that many good progressives have been fighting for the same ideas for decades. They seem absolutely frantic about the election as being a last hope.
TwilightZone
(25,470 posts)That's one explanation. I've had conversations with Sanders supporters who didn't know that there's a Congressional Progressive Caucus in Congress - with, shocker!; real, live, actual progressives - even though Sanders is himself a member. Those that do know it exists don't realize that those aren't the only progressives in Congress. There are a lot of them. Just not enough.
A lot of his supporters are independents (as they will never stop reminding everyone) that are so impressed with their independent status that they haven't ever bothered to learn anything about politics, politicians, or political history. And, yet, they know it all.

(11,573 posts)Not one of the Bernsters knows what happened there 43 years ago, or why it's important. (One thinks it had to do with cannabis, which is just pathetic.)
They don't know a damn thing about the history of civil rights conflicts unless they can fit BS into it.

(25,470 posts)I spent some time in my 'formative' years in and around Pine Ridge and the other reservations in central/western SD. My grandfather had a job that required a lot of travel and interaction in that part of the state, and I often went with him. I was already predisposed to being a liberal at a very young age, but those experiences further shaped my views.
Anyone who believes the ridiculous stereotypes about Native Americans (or, perhaps worse, knows nothing about the history, how they got there, and why many of them stay) should go live there for a month, assuming they'd make it that long. I think it would fundamentally change how they view poverty, alcoholism, drug abuse, and myriad other issues. We can start with the Libertarians.

(236 posts)And of course Bernie voted against Hillarycare back in the 90's when he was a representative, because it was not universal care. Twenty years later he votes for Obamacare - guess he finally realized universal care would only be achieved in babysteps. But still did not care that he set the movement back twenty years.
Now he wants to get credit for implementing universal care even though real democrats have been working on it for decades! Give that credit to Hillary - she was the forerunner of the movement!
Give me pragmatism any day!
