In an ironic twist

the closed primary in Kentucky actually hurt Hillary (although she won anyway). There are several states that used to be Democratic strongholds, but are now red. In those states, you still have a higher percentage of registered Dems that just vote Republican. Kentucky is one of those.

TN/KY border really highlights how much closed primaries hurt Clinton in places where reg. Dems often vote GOP



Basically, Hillary won counties in Tennessee heavily, where independents were allowed to vote, that were adjacent to counties in Kentucky that she lost, where only Dems were allowed to vote.

And those same Reagan Democrats will likely vote for Trump on the top ticket, then vote Democrats on the down-ticket.
