Bernie Hints at Convention Violence, Echoing Trump’s Threats

With his increasingly self-obsessed and reckless approach to the Democratic primary, Bernie isn’t hurting Hillary, he’s hurting himself. And he will quickly lose his supporters, who care more about their own future and less about his.

Bernie Sanders predicted Monday that the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia could be “messy” as he pushed the party to adopt his progressive agenda, but added: “Democracy is not always nice and quiet and gentle. … if you want everything to be quiet and orderly and allow, you know, just things to proceed without vigorous debate, that is not what democracy is about.”

Bernie knows exactly what his words imply, whether or not he pretends otherwise. This is hardly a time to be coy, especially in light of the recent violent threats against the family of Nevada’s Democratic State Chair.

Recall Donald Trump saying, “I think bad things would happen” about the GOP convention.

In his mind, Bernie is now the self-appointed savior of the Democratic Party, condescendingly dictating terms to the countless dedicated, principled Democrats who have spent their lives fighting for progressive causes.

It’s a level of hubris that will be rejected by all but his most entrenched supporters.

Here’s the thing: Bernie can’t really hurt Hillary. She’s withstood far more than he can muster and has come out stronger than ever. She has the nomination locked and will clinch the delegates within a couple of weeks.

As I argued months ago, Bernie’s decision to go hard negative on Hillary was a grave mistake. Many a reputation has crashed on the shores of Hillary’s strength and dignity. Bernie seems determined to follow in the footsteps of the many detractors who have underestimated Hillary and ruined their own legacy while trying in vain to damage hers.

His inability (or unwillingness) to be graceful in defeat is becoming a sorry spectacle. A life’s legacy at risk of being tossed away, and for what?
