Fairleigh Dickinson University, May 24, 2016 Donald Trump faces an uphill battle among New Jersey voters regardless of whom he faces in November. But his prospects are made more challenging when pitted against Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. The most recent statewide survey of registered voters from Fairleigh Dickinson Universitys PublicMind finds that if the election were held today, over half (57%) would support Bernie Sanders over Donald Trump (33%). Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton still bests Donald Trump by double digits, but her lead is cut to 48-37.
Sanders also enjoys the highest favorable ratings as compared with Trump and Clinton. Half (54%) have a favorable opinion of Sanders, compared with 43 percent for Clinton and 33 percent for Trump.
Even though its difficult to imagine a scenario in which Sanders would become the Democratic nominee, hes clearly the preferred candidate in our Democratic leaning state, said Krista Jenkins, professor of political science and director of PublicMind.
In a Clinton-Trump match up, a gender gap in the state is sizable. Over half of all women (56%) support Clinton, with half of all men (49%) saying theyd support Trump. Among single women, Clinton does even better, garnering 62 percent of their support. The only groups that offer a majority or more of their support to Donald Trump are Republicans (74%) and married men (54%), and Trump achieves a favorable rating at or above 50 percent among the same two groups only.
As whats been found nationally, the appeal that Sanders has among Millennials is striking in the Garden State. Almost eight-in-ten (78%) favor Sanders over Trump, with significantly fewer supporting Clinton (52%) over Trump (22%).

Why do these polls have to include Sanders when it's clear he isn't going to be the nominee? It is just to embarrass HRC. The reason she runs behind St. Bernie is that a large number of his supporters (mostly younger men) are "undecided" as to how they will vote in November. Even so--against HRC Trump is only at 22% among Millennials--with mostly Sanders supporters (26%) undecided. In the end I believe most will come over to HRC.

(30,058 posts)Republicans saying they are for Sanders in the polls in order to skew the poll results. Also, the GOP will not let up on the getting process, it would be brutal.

(657 posts)Last week trump signs started appearing everywhere. There's one on my block, but other streets have many. I pass them and can't imagine that I live amidst such stupid people. It is amazing.
