I use to have a friend who used to compare that kind of thinking to stepping in fresh dogshit--it's warm and soft and comfortable at first and you don't smell the stink, or realize what you've stepped in until you stir it up.

FAR too many people stay in the warm and soft stage. That doesn't mean it's not racist dogshit.

to build on what was good about the Clinton years, and ditch the rest. Hillary knows this. Anyone calling for Hillary (who was not President) to be punished for the mass incarceration of the 80's & 90's, either didn't live in the inner city, or they've caught a case of amnesia. When the crack epidemic took hold, it was a horrible time, and rates of black-on-black crime skyrocketed. People were looking for solutions, and the fact that the crime bill had some horrendous unintended consequences cannot be laid at the feet of Hillary Clinton, who was First Lady.

Perhaps black people aren't as "uninformed" as the author would like to think. Maybe black people know that Bernie actually voted for the damn crime bill, and maybe that's why we aren't voting for him in significant numbers.

At the time that law was passed by Congress (and voted FOR by Sanders) Hillary Clinton was First Lady and Bill Clinton was President. Neither of them VOTED for it and neither of them "PASSED" it. If anyone "passed" it or were directly instrumental in it being passed, it was Sanders.

But he's got an excuse why he voted for it, just like he's got excuses for voting for or against lots of other bad legislation.

Thankfully the primary/caucus voters are making him accountable for his dismal Congressional/Senatorial record.

Thu May 26, 2016, 03:31 AM
May 2016

that the most insidiously evil thing you can do to someone is to patronize them.

It happens to the black community often, in sometimes very subtle ways.

Even things like overly praising someone or taking their side when they are wrong are evidential of that.

Sometimes that subtle, latent feeling boils over like it did in this asshole's post... that feeling is bubbling below the surface for many of the people who consider themselves champions of racial equality.

I find it utterly shocking that so many of these BS supporters are absolutely unwilling to accept that someone else can be smart, kind, educated, successful or any other positive characteristic but just see things differently than them or have different values.

The mere suggestion that someone could not like Bernie or not want him in office seems to be like telling them 2+2 = 5. They just can't comprehend how someone can think such a thing and they almost immediately get angry and go negative.

There are some truly great days ahead. June 7th will be one. The day Bernie endorses Hillary will be another. The convention will be another. And election day will be another.

So many succulent and precious moments to look forward to

91. "cuts to your welfare and programs???"
Fri May 27, 2016, 03:22 AM
May 2016

So what is this idiot saying, that being on welfare and programs is somehow intrinsic to the Black experience or something? Yes, we live in a racist society where blacks have higher rates of both incarceration and "welfare and programs," and we should correct this. However, taking that to an assumption that these qualities are what define Black americans is just beyond disgusting and assumes that they somehow must be kept in a little bubble and do what they're told. It's insufferable to read.

I detest Condoleezza Rice's politics as the day is long, but she said something years ago that has stuck with me ever since and I wish I could find the exact quote or clip. She was talking about her journey and how she was taught by her parents to be "twice as good" as any white man if she wanted to succeed. It hit me first because so many Black republicans act as though systemic racism has somehow magically gone away. Ms. Rice didn't say that. She acknowledged the systemic racism. But then it hit me. She became twice as good. Yeah, I don't like her political beliefs or her participation in Iraq but I do celebrate her pride in kicking the system's ass and doing it in a way where she didn't have to be a template for anyone else's politics, even ones I disagree with. And that right there is the kicker. These Bernie supporters feel like people like you, Bravenak, are no better than Condoleezza Rice because, to them, you should fit some template of what a black person should be. If a black woman wants to be Condoleezza Rice, that's her choice! And if a black woman wants to be Bravenak, rock on! I can see why you get so angry and I couldn't be more lily white. It pisses me off every time I see you say these things and see how little they actually hear you.

I thank God that I did not have to face the challenge of systemic racism. The challenge of straight-up poverty was hard enough, but more than anything I wanted to proud of what I achieved. The way these people talk about support for Hillary misses a huge point. The black community had its highest income averages during Bill Clinton's presidency. That's pride in one's own achievements, a quality that can build hope and strength in any color. Who doesn't want the empowerment to feel great about themselves? Yes, we all want to know there's a safety net when we need it and I believe that Hillary supports that net in a more empowering way. I partly supported her husband's reform of welfare not because I wanted to see those nets go away, but because I wanted to see the conversation changed to one where people are empowered to feel better than a refugee floating in a life preserver in the middle of a stormy sea. Not being black, I can only guess at this, but if I had to zero in on why the Clintons speak to many in the black community, it is because they see them as more than just a cardboard cutout of poverty and programs.

It just ticks me off. I have friends of all stripes, including *gasp* Republicans. I'm in business. Of course I might trip over one here and there. I never look at anyone and say to myself, "oh, you're a black man (or woman, or Asian, or Italian white guy). You should be this religion, that political bent, or eat this kind of food." I have no idea what experiences bring a person to where they are independent of all the various global variables we have to deal with as people. If I were a deeply conservative Black Christian who was worth ten million dollars, I might be a religious right Republican looking for backward social policies and lower taxes and nobody could say I was voting against type. That's the piece these people don't get. It's not that your blackness is incidental anymore than my whiteness is, but these states exist within broader palettes than these people are painting with. The far left intellectual arguing for some cardboard cutout treatment of people of color is just as bad in my opinion as far right "intellectuals" trying to argue that society is a colorblind meritocracy.

I don't think Clinton is perfect. Far from it. But who the hell is? These people defying Sanders don't realize that the image they're grafting onto him exists only in a groupthink place in their head. Hillary is a realist. She gets this isn't about bogus promises. It's about getting to work and making things happen. I don't think they can handle us accepting that this candidate has flaws because they cannot understand that every candidate does, and sometimes those flaws are just those things that we see as personally disagreeing with our paradigm but we accept them because we like the bigger picture.
