The Right to Vote Matters

A reflection on the Voting Rights Act of 1965

Senator Joe Neal knows a thing or two about shaking up the status quo. As the first African-American elected to the Nevada State Senate, he spent 32 years fighting for working middle-class Americans and equality, sometimes standing up against special interests alone.

On the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the retired senator and supporter of Hillary Clinton sat down with us to share his thoughts on how being raised in rural Louisiana pre-VRA and fighting for everyday Nevadans shaped his worldview, and what this landmark law means for civil rights.

Finally got the right. Amazing in my lifetime have seen attempts to stop women from voting because "white men" thought they would make better decisions than women. The Voters Rights Act was a hard fought one also. Protesters was jailed, struck and in the effort to get AA's registered to vote there was some killed. The GOP has a problem getting elected so here comes voter suppression. The voter ID is a crappy way of preventing many from voting, we cannot allow the GOP to continue to win with this game, we have to get registered and get the ID required and then go and vote. I don't agree with the ID crap but we can beat them at their game, we have the numbers.

We should find every way imaginable to let someone vote and count that vote!

Voting is what gives our form of government legitimacy.

I bet another purpose of Republican voter suppression is to purposefully reinforce anti-government sentiment in blacks and Hispanics, to create a sense of separateness instead of inclusion. Republican think-tanks actually develop sophisticated long-range psychological programs to give them an edge, and manipulate classes of people.

Voting can change everything!

I love the fact that Hillary Clinton is making voting rights a major issue and I love the proposals she has advanced
