Sharpton: Clinton needs to 'toughen up'

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/06/al-sharpton-hillary-clinton-223767

Hillary Clinton needs to steel herself for asymmetrical, unconventional campaign warfare against Donald Trump, the Rev. Al Sharpton said Wednesday, days after telling The New York Times that the Democratic front-runner is going into a "street fight with a guy with a razor and a broken Coca-Cola bottle."

"You can't come in with gloves waiting on the referee to fight Donald Trump. You've got to fight the kind of fight he's fighting. He showed that yesterday," Sharpton said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," in reference to Trump's news conference about donations to veterans groups that degenerated into attacks on the media.

Asked how the need to face Trump should alter Clinton's approach, Sharpton was blunt.

"It means that she's either got to toughen up or have tougher surrogates that can resonate with her base," Sharpton said. "Otherwise she looks like she's out of touch only because you're in a ring and the fight's out in the alley."

The native New Yorker explained that he has "known and dealt with" the city's press "all my life," adding, "Trump is a bully."

"You deal with a bully by calling a bully's shot. You don't try to explain. You're in the schoolyard in New York — Trump and I both grew up in New York — you're in a schoolyard in New York and a bully talks about your family. You don't come back and explain to him, well, let me tell you what parenting class — you come back and call his bluff," Sharpton said. "And you're lecturing to him about parenting rather than dealing with I'm calling your bluff."

Perhaps he would like to get in a few jabs?

I don't watch his show since they moved it, but his network has been one of the biggest showcases for trump's campaign.

6. Thanks for your concern, Rev. Al, but I think Hillary knows exactly what she's up against.

Trump didn't earn many friends yesterday by calling out an ABC reporter as a "sleaze". You can't bully the media and come out looking good.

On Tuesday, Trump pointed out ABC News reporter Tom Llamas and called him "a sleaze." Llamas' crime? Asking the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to explain why he had misled people about how much money he'd raised for veterans.
During his tirade about the press, he interrupted CNN's Jim Acosta who was asking Trump about his ability to deal with scrutiny, to say sarcastically, "Excuse me, excuse me. I've watched you on TV. You're a real beauty."
The attack, which came amid one of Trump's familiar diatribes about the "dishonest" media, was the latest in a string of personal insults Trump has made against reporters covering his campaign.
Trump has called Fox News host Megyn Kelly "a bimbo." He dubbed NBC's Katy Tur, "little Katy, third-rate journalist." He has also individually tweaked reporters from the New York Times, Politico, CNN and elsewhere. And at nearly every rally, the brash billionaire reams the press as "dishonest," "disgusting," "slime" and "scum," calling political reporters the worst types of human beings on earth, prompting his crowds of thousands of supporters to turn, without fail, to jeer and sometimes curse at the press.

Of course she is tough, but Sharpton is pointing out how unconventional Trump is.
He is saying that she may have to drop the curtain of civility and get dirty.
Elizabeth Warren has the right idea IMO.

And agree that Hillary is tough. She'll have lots of surrogates who will keep up the pounding and she can do some but would love her to save her best blows for the debate and do them to his face... His ego won't be able to take it (being taken down by her) and let's see him unhinged even more on live TV...awesome!!

Absolute rubbish.
Al doesn't understand what tough is.

Fighting a narcissist with their own tactics is not a wise game for they are willing to do and say anything to win. They are willing to stoop lower than any decent person is willing to stoop.

MLK was correct when he said we cannot drive out darkness with darkness.

15. The LAST thing she needs to do is get in the mud with Lyin'Don. She needs to follow the example

that Obama set forth in order to win with more than 51% of the votes - and that is NOT to get down and dirty in the mud. The vast majority of voting Americans don't want their potential president acting like a schoolyard bully.

The Lyin'-Don will do everything he can not to have to talk policy or how he'll do X as opposed to Z. He NEEDS to create distractions lest he be asked what he will do for the country - of which he has no clue. That's where she's strongest and that's where she needs to attack him.

I know the media would LOVE to report on a food-fight in order to boost their ratingds, but that's the job of her surrogates, not Hillary Clinton. She needs to present the face of the President of the United States, and she doesn't have the luxury of acting like a U.S. Rep on the national stage.

Al Sharpton is wrong.
