San Diego Union-Tribune Endorses Hillary Clinton

But we find Sanders far less appealing than his admirers. What feels like idealism to some people looks like grandstanding on closer examination.

Consider his signature proposal to make tuition free at state-supported colleges, with the federal government picking up two-thirds of the cost and individual states one-third. State participation is not mandatory.

At the least, it would have the effect of forcing all participating states to radically reshape their budgets — making free college the top priority over public safety, health care, K-12 education, road repairs and more. States that wanted to maintain existing programs at current levels would have to sharply raise taxes.

States aren’t going to do this. Free college tuition may be the top priority for college students and their parents, but not everyone else. Valuing free tuition over kindergarten and grade school education, for the most obvious example, makes no sense.

No wonder Sanders doesn’t have the support of a single senator for his plan.

And at her best — during her six years in the Senate — she impressed lawmakers from both parties and her constituents as a substantive, collaborative leader and a hard worker; dozens of senators have now endorsed her. Unlike Sanders, she understands that compromise, more than ever, is the only way to get things done in Washington. Also unlike Sanders, her feet are on the ground.

For voters with a Democratic ballot, Clinton is the clear choice.

the very first area to be helped should be elementary/middle/high schools and then preschools.
Without caring for the early education needs, college is a remote possibility for more than just financial reasons.

Getting a kid, especially a poor kid, off on the right foot at preschool with a comfort in basic math (counting to 10, shape recognition) and early reading (memorizing alphabet, reading simple words, learning basic phonics) sets the kid up for confidently attacking the rest of his academic years.

Without free preschool, poor kids start off elementary school illiterate and behind, leading to a snowball effect of failure, frustration and crime.

Hillary knows this. Her lifelong work with children, starting with the Children's Defense Fund when she graduated from Yale, taught her this. That is why she has been such a strong advocate for free preschool for those who can't afford it. It also has the double benefit of providing childcare so the parents can work. And preschool is a lot cheaper to subsidize than college. Win-win-win.

And HRC knows this like you said! She mentioned in a few debates! Which no one else seems to have mentioned or cared about!

Love that the Tribune did this. I lived in San Diego County for six years and was the Treasurer of my local Democratic Club. The Democrats in San Diego are outnumbered by Republicans, but they are fierce!

And a powerful indictment of her rival's platform.

That pretty much sums it up.

This, along with the LA Times endorsement should help in CA. I know that endorsements don't usually sway people who have already made up their minds, but do help with undecideds.

"Clinton is the clear choice." Indeed.
