Some of the Vermont senator's backers think the president is trying to end the Democratic fight prematurely.

Bernie Sanders’ supporters have some advice for President Barack Obama: Back off.
Thursday morning in the Oval Office, Obama will take his not-so-subtle campaign to ease Sanders out of an active campaign directly to the senator himself. But he’ll need to be diplomatic.

Even as some top supporters have started backing down since Tuesday night, when Hillary Clinton claimed the Democratic nomination — and as a planned Sanders letter to superdelegates campaigning for them to support him rather than Clinton appears in limbo — frustration is bubbling among those who want the senator to keep the campaign going.

In their view, the president is trying to prematurely end the fight. They warn that it won’t work and that the blowback might show him he’s not as popular with the Sanders wing of the Democratic Party as he might like to think.

“The president is not Sen. Sanders’ boss. We’ve got to get this straight here,” said Nina Turner, a former Ohio state senator who’s been traveling the country on behalf of the campaign. “There’s respect that’s for the commander in chief … but Sen. Sanders is duly elected, and he’ll make his own decisions.”

I'm asking seriously, because I don't remember this. I wasn't paying nearly as much attention back then because I was happy with both of them so I just let it play out and then tuned in closer to the general election.

I was on HRC's camp but not part of any drama happening. Voted from abroad, first for HRC and then for Obama!

I don't think anyone has ever coddled Hillary, but then I can't really remember this specific period in 2008. She's always been really good at "manning up" (for lack of a better term) and putting her big girl panties on (HAH), which is part of the reason I like her so much.

When the race was extremely close, Senators, party members and the media were telling her to drop out as early as March. The demand was constant. Networks were calling her Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction for continuing, saying she and Obama should go into a room and only he comes out, said someone should take her "behind the barn" (which means an ass whooping) to teach her a lesson, etc. It was extremely hostile. No coddling whatsoever. Bernie has been treated with kid gloves.

Notice how despite a nearly 4 million vote lead, Sander's supporters are still demanding her to be eliminated.

There is a real problem when social media and prime time news commentary use references to violence to describe how a candidate should behave. And that violence extends to supporters and the reporters who write about her favorably. Bernie has not had to cope with any of that. Far from being coddled, Hillary has had to endure not just insults but threats for years. She is extremely tough and handles herself with incredible grace under fire.

but in this instance, I think that's the only thing that will satisfy them. Sanders can only threaten the Democratic Party so far left. There are moderate and conservative Democrats within the party and we have to cater to all Democrats and their stances--no matter how much we may not want to do so at times...it's called being a grown-up and being inclusive. These Bernie or Bust people really are misinformed about what they can make the Democratic Party do.

What fight? Hillary Clinton won the battle and will formally be declared the Democrat nominee at the party convention. It will be a formality, that is all--she IS already the primary winner.

Anyone who believes otherwise is deluded, and anyone who is posturing themselves otherwise (Bernie) is playing a game of power while he still clutches his list of campaign donors and still is using their ears to keep their attention fixed to him in order to make demands from the Party to feed his ego. Which, in addition to being something you send your child to a timeout for, is not even through. There are 3 people you could argue are heads of the Democratic Party:

1) Barack Obama. Democratic President of the United States. Clearly the leader and face of the party.

2) Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Elected head of the DNC.

3) Hillary Clinton. Democratic Nominee for president.

All 3 of those people have a claim to being Bernie's boss in the Democratic Primary. Which of those 3 would Ms. Turner like Bernie to deal with, cause all 3 of them will tell him the same thing...you ran, you lost. She's right, he's elected, Senator of Vermont. He ran for the presidential nomination and lost. He was not elected anything in the Democratic Primary, so what is she even talking about?

He has as much claim to the Democratic Nomination as Martin O'Malley at this point, and if he didn't want to deal with party politics, and the need to reconcile quickly when the race is done, he should not have fake joined the party to run for President. Of course, if he'd run as an independent, no one would have paid attention to him, he would been marginalized, and disappeared. He's spent the last year using the Democratic Party for personal gain, and it's enough. If he really cares about changing the party, making it more liberal, etc., then get on board and be a team player. If he actually doesn't care about the party, then get out.
