Rachel Maddow on Convention Protests ~ 5/18/16 show transcript (HRC GP)

I remember Rachel Maddow tackling the possibility of unrest at both Republican and Democratic Conventions this year almost a month ago. So thought I'd find it and post some excerpts. If I find the video I'll post it too.

Democrats will hold their convention this summer in Philadelphia. You may
remember the last national political convention was held in Philadelphia
was in the year 2000. You may also remember that nearly 400 people were
arrested at really big protests in the streets of Philadelphia that year.

Four years later, at the Republican convention in New York City, it wasn`t
400 people who got arrested. It was more like 2,000 people who got
arrested, protesting in the streets, just massive, massive uprising against
that political convention.

Four years after that, the Ron Paul movement within the Republican Party
convened 10,000 people for not just a protest, but for an entire shadow
convention run in parallel with the Republican Party`s convention. The
Republican Party convention was in St. Paul. The Ron Paul parallel shadow
convention was just across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, 10,000
people not just demonstrating their differences with the Republican Party,
but basically declaring themselves a schismatic offshoot of the party, one
that could probably never be reconciled with these decisions by the party
elite and the party establishment that they disagreed with so strongly.

Street protests, breakaway movements, demonstrations of different kinds,
they are the American way. They are cathartic. They are occasionally
interesting. They are occasionally violent. They are sometimes fun, but
they happen.

They`re almost part of the process now. We expect them. In the news
media, we cover them. In politics, they get covered, they get noticed,
they sometimes get in the way, and then we move on.

AND:

The other thing to keep in mind about the Democratic anxiety today
concerning Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton is that at this point in the
primary process, it`s always like this. There is always acrimony and upset
between remaining candidates at this part of the race.

Parties just do this. It is to be expected. It`s very, very rarely fatal.

"This is normal". No, this is not normal, smart or productive. But Rachel excuses a lot when it's Sanders.

30,000 young people who believe they have been cheated of their future, marching through the streets of Philly while, right in the middle, the devil incarnate is being nominated to the position their adored hero should have had.

What could go wrong???

This isn't the first protest. Protests are part of our heritage. There will be one at the convention and then we'll move on.

Like every other cable news talking head, she needs sensationalism and scandal because they're easy points on the board when it comes to having something to spend time talking about.

If she had to report on a normal convention proceeding without incident, she'd probably go crazy from frustration.

They will be entirely impotent; SBS having endorsed Hillary "long" ago by then.

It'll be a lame little hipster bubble-gum version of occupy 2.0 with signs about 1%! and Oligarchy! and No More 3rd Way! and some of the other kitsch from the BoB dictionary.

The media will wring their hands for a few seconds, and then return to the drama inside the building, where the first woman in the history of the country will accept the nomination of a major political party. The grown-ups will get on with the business that matters, and we will have a Democratic President, House and Senate.

against civil demonstrations - but I'd like the definitive word here to be CIVIL. And we've seen in past protests that once you get passionate people together to demonstrate, civility is the last thing on their minds.

across. No one likes to be bullied with nasty words and physical assault of any level.

When Con-Don had to show his face in California, the violence got out of hand each and every time. I seriously doubt you'd approve of that type of protest.

Democracy itself and the Democratic Party will be ok. Protests happen whether I stress over it or not, so I don't stress.

I did not think that Rachel Maddow was encouraging unrest at the convention.

I thought she was trying to tell Democrats that everything was alright! Unrest or not!

I got the impression that she knows that the DEMS need/ought/have to and must save the day, especially when it comes to someone unstable and racist like Trump.

The only thing I would've added to her discussion is that not all protests are covered. I refer distinctly about the massive protest during Bush's* day of installment.

I knew there were protests, but had no idea how massive it was until I saw Michael Moore's film "Sicko". That made me angrier than I was already. And, I will never forget!
