1. How did a socialist kibbutz influence Bernie Sanders? ~CNN

Is this the birthplace of Bernie Sanders' policies?

http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/09/politics/bernie-sanders-kibbutz-volunteer-israel/

A small collective community in northern Israel, modeled after the communist ideals of the Soviet Union, may hold clues to the development of U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders' political beliefs.

Sanders is Jewish and a self-described "democratic socialist." In the 1960s, he spent several months volunteering on an Israeli collective farm, or kibbutz, that functioned according to communist principles.

For years, Sanders has said he had been on a kibbutz but has been vague about exactly where he stayed. The mystery was apparently solved last week when Israeli newspaper Haaretz dug up a 1990 interview with Sanders. In the article, Sanders claimed he spent several months in 1963 volunteering at Shaar Ha'amakim.

The kibbutz was a cornerstone of Israeli society in the decades before and after the nation was founded in 1948. They were a way for Jewish immigrants from all over the world to work together, growing crops and building a sense of community.
Members, known as kibbutzniks, looked after the land, shared property and distributed profits equally.

There were many venues promoting socialism in the 60s, including Cuba.

These days, like many liberals, Sanders would prefer not to be associated with Israel, especially with the current government.

I think it would be interesting just to see the role it played in his development.
Personally I am an atheist. What made me curious is him being vague, as in not wanting to bring this up.

In a general election his biography would come out. Why not now!?

Or where it was? That seems to be an assertion on the part of the reporter with no evidence to back it up.

Sanders’ time on the kibbutz, where he lived for a few months with his ex-wife, Deborah Messing (born Deborah Shiling) is referenced in virtually every profile of the candidate. But the Sanders campaign has been tight-lipped about the name of the kibbutz, leaving journalists in Israel and the U.S. searching fruitlessly for months. It was only on February 4 that Yossi Melman, a longtime Israeli national security journalist, unearthed a 1990 interview he did with the candidate in the Israeli Haaretz newspaper, in which he revealed that the kibbutz in question was Sha'ar Ha'amakim.

By 1963, when Sanders did his volunteer work, Hashomer Hatzair’s admiration for Stalin had greatly faded, though not yet vanished. At the time, no one thought it unusual. Nevertheless, the movement’s historic sympathy for the ruthless Soviet leader is viewed as astonishing nowadays.
