........The Pinocchio Test
Plainly put, Sanders has not released his full federal tax return. The little he has released was the Form 1040 in 2014, which is a summary of his tax filing that gives a snapshot of his finances not what is considered a full tax return. The Sanders campaign confirmed to The Washington Post that it has not released other tax returns prior to 2014, which is a sharp contrast to Clintons voluminous release of her complete tax returns.
Tapper correctly questioned Sanders, asking why nobody has seen them [federal tax returns] at all. Yet Sanders interrupted Tapper to reject the notion, insisting: That is not true. Of course, we have released them in the past. But this answer is nothing remotely close to the little federal tax records he has released to the public.
Sanders says there is nothing in his 2015 tax return that is different from what the public has seen for the last many years. This indicates he may have been referring to the information filed in his financial disclosures. But thats not the same as a full federal tax return and as a longtime member of Congress, Sanders should know that.
Sanders is not required to release his tax filings, and he clearly decided to keep them confidential. Thats his choice. But it doesnt excuse him from misleading the public to believe otherwise with this false claim.

(1,019 posts)Welcome to being vetted, Bernie. I know it's a completely new experience for you, what with all the fawning coverage you're used to in Vermont.

(27,843 posts)1) Why is she preparing them instead of an accountant? That makes zero sense, frankly, at their income level and professional level (U.S. Senator, college president)
2) Did she receive a buyout when she was asked to resign from her college presidency? This is only a guess, but it intrigues me. Her career did not end on a very up note.
3) Maybe they are just a big fat mess. With a non-professional taking care of this task that should, frankly, be put into the hands of a capable CPA, maybe she just has an administrative mess on her hands.
Note: merely a guess. But we're all focusing on Bernie's taxes instead of their joint filing.

(9,494 posts)it's possible that he hasn't donated a penny to any cause in his entire life. Maybe his greed is part of the problem too.

(27,843 posts)I'm not entirely unsympathetic with his position on charities because I think government should provide a lot more than it does. The reality, though, is that we live in a world where charitable contribution is necessary. I donate time and money to a few, though I'm pretty careful about it (careful as in making sure the organization is on the up and up).

(34,498 posts)that was required for something - Sen. disclosure rule? They had salary income of about $157000, plus SS, plus pension, plus some investments and other income.
It doesn't make sense that a couple in their tax bracket does their own taxes. I have 3 good friends who are accountants and they want to know why Jane wants to put them out of work!

(34,498 posts)Unless they have a very complex situation, which they may have, packages like TurboTax automate so much that people with computer skills can do them.
But either way, there is no excuse for not disclosing them. If he wants to say he considers them private, he should say that. But if he wants credit for being open and honest, and he implies that HRC is hiding something bad by not disclosing private info about speeches, then he needs to get the info out there.

(58 posts)Isn't this called "concern trolling" to spend 3 paragraphs speculating that Sen. Sanders has some tax skeleton in his closet when you have no evidence of it.
Your "concern" about his tax preparation is just silly. Anyone with an 8th grade reading level can do their own taxes if they have a single income, a retired spouse, and simple assets. They don't need an accountant or tax preparer.
As a supporter of a candidate who has been vilified and conspired against forever, I would think you would see the pettiness of your strategy.
You want HRC to win and are anxious.... it's not looking good on you.
