A former Colombian congressman was Tuesday apprehended by authorities in the northern city of Barranquilla for alleged ties to paramilitary groups.
The arrest of the former congressman, Pedro Miguel Peñalosa, was carried out by order of the Supreme Court. Miguel allegedly had ties to a bloc of the now-defunct AUC paramilitary group which once operated in Colombia's northern Magdalena department.
He will be transferred to the country's capital of Bogota on Wednesday, where he will face charges for conspiracy.
Peñalosa was the deputy to former Congressman Jorge Luis Caballero, who was arrested and sentenced to 10 years for paramilitary ties with a former commander of the AUC, Edgar Ignacio Fierro, alias "Don Antonio".
