President José Mujica nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

28/05/13.- President of Uruguay, José Mujica, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 2013, thanks to his fight against drug trafficking and his plan to give the state control of marijuana production, distribution and marketing.

"Mujica is the first in the world who has proposed ending this war that benefited no one, except for dark interests," said Bronkhorst in a short statement released by the international press.

In the text, the president of the NGO argues that Mujica should be awarded for "trying to replace the so-called war on drugs with drug peace", in reference to a bill submitted to Parliament by the Uruguayan President.

The regulations would authorize the State to take "control and regulation of the business of importing, exporting, planting, cultivation, harvesting, production, acquisition, storage, marketing and distribution of cannabis or its derivatives."

Bronkhorst said the president also has other qualities which position him as an interesting candidate for the prize, including his "austerity" and "anti-capitalism".

During his visit, Bronkhorst participated in workshops organized by the JND (National Drugs Junta), and met with local activists like John Vaz, parliamentary advisor and member of the Association of Cannabis Studies of Uruguay. "Mujica is a president who did not wait to be a former President to fight for this. There's a mountain of former presidents who only open their mouths when its safe to do so, "Vaz told The Observer, referring to the former Presidents of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Colombia, César Gaviria, and Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo, who now propose abandoning the prohibitionist paradigm regulate the (marijuana) market.

Referring to the government project, Vaz explained that it "is intended to end the drug war, which has more victims than results." "Developed countries prohibit them and Latin America pays the price in deaths," he added. Bronkhorst agrees with this and says Mujica can contribute to a solve this.

3. He has fought for peace almost all his adult life, it seems.

This tremendous guy DOES deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. If they run out of the prizes, they should take the one they gave Henry Kissinger by mistake, and give that one to Pres. Mujica!

Just scratch out the Kissinger name, scratch right through it! Should never have been there in the first place. What WERE they thinking that year?

This is the one candidate who knows what it's like to suffer for your beliefs, having been thrown in prison for his opposition to the fascist regime which hired the US professional torturer, Dan Mitrione to torture and terrorize leftists in his sound-proof torture chamber, giving demonstrations in order to train Uruguayan police in Montevideo, using equipment smuggled in to him in diplomatic pouches.

Mujica has paid the price for freedom with his own life's work.
