GUATEMALA CITY (AP) An argument over plans to build a factory and highway west of Guatemala City provoked a violent clash that has left at least six people dead and dozens of others seriously wounded.
The violence broke out late Friday when residents supporting the development projects argued with opponents, who say construction of the regional highway and a cement factory will damage their lands, Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez Bonilla told The Associated Press on Saturday.
Lopez Bonilla said the dead suffered gunshot and machete wounds. Preliminary reports said five of the victims were members of the same family.
The violence erupted in Pajoques, a town in the municipality of San Juan Sacatepequez, some 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of the capital.
