Prosecutor General wants FARC members exempted from extradition

Prosecutor General wants FARC members exempted from extradition
Sep 24, 2014 posted by Joel Gillin

Colombia’s Prosecutor General said Wednesday that he supports exempting FARC members from extradition in the event of a peace accord with the government.

Eduardo Montealegre told Colombian television network RCN that he believes extradition should not be obstacle to an eventual peace agreement between the FARC and the government currently being negotiated.

“If the mechanism of collaboration that some sectors have with drug trafficking are broken and they contribute to combating the environment and context that permits narco-trafficking in Colombia,” Montealegre said in the interview, he would support the introduction of “norms” that wouldn’t permit the extradition of guerrillas.

His announcement comes as the 29th round of negotiations between Colombia’s largest guerrilla force and the government get underway in Havana, Cuba.
