US Troops In Colombia Linked To More Than 50 Rapes - Report

BOGOTA, May 6 (BERNAMA-NNN-EFE)-- At least 53 underaged girls were raped by U.S. military personnel and contractors based in Colombia, according to a report prepared as part of the ongoing peace process between the Colombian government and the FARC rebel group.

The 800-page document is the work of 12 experts, six picked by the government and another six by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

In a section prepared by Renan Vega Cantor, head of the Department of Social Sciences at the National Pedagogical University in the central Colombian towns of Melgar and Girardot, are compiled the cases of sexual abuse committed near the country's largest military base, Tolemaida.

The U.S. personnel not only raped the adolescents, they videotaped the assaults and made copies to sell as pornography, according to Vega's report.

One of the rape victims was only 12.

Colombia to investigate alleged child abuse by United States military

Posted 47 minutes ago

Colombian authorities say they will investigate allegations of child sexual abuses by US contractors and military staff.

Historian Renen Vega claimed 53 minors were sexually abused by US troops when they were in the country between 2003 and 2007.

The claims were published in February in a report on talks between the government and leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas.

The US soldiers were said to have filmed the acts and sold the tapes as pornographic material.
