1st released paramilitary commander assassinated in Medellin

former mid-level commander of the paramilitary AUC has been assassinated in Medellin, reportedly three weeks after his release from prison where he spent eight years after admitting to 230 war crimes, authorities said Sunday.

Medellin police commander General Jose Gerardo Acevedo told press that the former commander of the AUC’s Calima Bloc, alias “Sancocho,” on Saturday was assassinated in Moravia, a poor neighborhood in the northeast of the city and led by “HH.” Two men who were near the former paramilitary commander were purposely killed in the shooting.

Sancocho was the former commander of the Farallones front of the Calima Bloc, a division of the AUC active of the southwestern Cauca and Valle del Cauca provinces, and led by “HH.”

The former paramilitary had completed his reduced penalty of eight years in prison after being convicted for 231 war crimes. Among the crimes were the killing of union leaders, indigenous and farmers’ rights leaders accused by the AUC of supporting leftist rebel group FARC.

Former Colombian Militia Chief Murdered After Completing Prison Term

BOGOTA, June 9 (BERNAMA-NNN-EFE) -- Jose de Jesus Perez Jimenez, alias Sancocho, former militia head who was released after completing his prison sentence, was murdered on Saturday by two members of a criminal gang in Medellin, police sources confirmed on Sunday.

Sancocho was killed by two armed men who used the external staircase to enter the house he was residing in, according to Deputy Colonel Luis Alfredo Cogollo Rueda.

Perez, 46, was watching the Soccer Champions League Final with Walter Manuel Perez, who was also shot dead.

While fleeing, the criminals also shot and wounded Andres Felipe Alvarez, 24-year-old repairing his motorbike in the street, who died after being admitted to a hospital.
