Shots Fired as Mutiny Breaks Out in Guatemalan Prison
Published 30 April 2016 (7 hours 16 minutes ago)
Guatemalan Pavo Prison officials said at least two persons have been injured. Both have been rushed to hospital.
Guatemalan authorities reported Saturday afternoon that a mutiny broke out in the massively overcrowded prison of Pavon, located about 30 miles south of the capital Guatemala after two female visitors were arrested while attempting to smuggle a 9mm handgun and 24 munitions. So far, at least two inmates have been reported injured.
The two women said they were going into the prison to visit an inmate identified as Damian Andres Ramon Hernandez.
Hernandez, also known as El Spuki, is said to be a member of a gang called Solo Para Locos, or Only for Demented, was arrested in October 2014 and charged with homicide, extortion and other crimes. A few days after his detention, at least 13 other persons working for him were also arrested.
