President calls on Massa to vote against employment bill

President Mauricio Macri has asked his former rival and circumstantial ally Sergio Massa to rally his congressional troops against the labour emergency bill approved last week by the Senate, encouraging him to not vote along the lines of the “Kirchnerites” as he has denied once again that Argentina is facing a labour crisis.

Massa emerged from a meeting with Victory Front (FpV) Senator Miguel Ángel Pichetto on Monday night promising to try to modify the bill in the Lower House so as to include small- and medium-sized businesses but that he would support it if the language stayed the same. Pichetto flatly refused any changes to the bill from its current form, which calls for double compensation for workers laid off in a 180-day period.

In a press conference offered at the Pink House this morning, Macri called opposition leaders “not to join Kirchnerism” in Congress, appealing to Massa in particular.

Massa wrapped up the 2015 presidential campaign with a middle-of-the-road approach between Macri and Daniel Scioli of the FpV, and since has been part of the broadly pro-dialogue sectors within the pan-Peronist caucuses. The Renewal Front has about 30 votes in a Lower House and without a PRO majority he has been able to exact concessions from the government in previous debates.
