Cold War Redux? US and Argentina to Strengthen Military Ties

The agreement comes as resurgent, right-wing political forces look to rollback the left's progressive gains in Latin America.
Argentina's Defense Ministry wants to turn back the clock and revive stronger military ties with the United States.
Defense officials visited Washington, D.C., this week to “reinstate bilateral relations” with the United States in defense and military support.
“Our objective is to retake the political coordination that was normal between Argentina and the United States," said Military Strategy and Affairs Secretary Angel Tello, which includes enhancing military to military cooperation.
However, most Argentines might not want "normal," as in the past that has meant Washington backing and arming a violent and repressive military junta in the 1970s and 1980s.
Officials from both countries have signed a cooperation agreement that will be made official by Argentina's Defense Ministry in the near future. Part of the agreement states that the U.S. wants Argentina to send an unarmed mission to Colombia to act as observers and inspectors after the final peace agreement.
