LA PAZ, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) placed Bolivia at the forefront of gender equality legislation on Tuesday after the South American country approved and enacted the Gender Identity Law on May 21.

In a press release, the UN congratulated Bolivia's legislative body and the government for bringing into force the law, as "only 41 countries have a similar law all over the world."

The new law confirms transsexual and transgender people in the country have the right to change their names, gender status and photos on all of their official identity documents, and exercise the fundamental rights in such areas as voting, education, medical treatment, employment and housing.

The UN also called for strengthened commitment to and protection of human rights regardless of people's sexual orientation or gender identity.
