US Fugitives Says Cuba Has Reassured Them They Are Safe

By MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN, ASSOCIATED PRESS HAVANA — Jun 10, 2016, 3:13 PM ET

Two black militants living in Cuba who are wanted in the slayings of U.S. law-enforcement officers say officials on the island have assured them that detente with Washington will not lead to their extradition.

Charles Hill is sought in the 1971 killing of a New Mexico state policeman. He tells The Associated Press that Cuban contacts recently assured him he was at no risk of extradition.

Nehanda Abiodun is wanted in a 1981 armored car robbery that left two offers and a security guard dead. She said Friday that she received a similar guarantee.

Cuba is home to scores of Americans wanted back home on charges from murder to Medicare fraud. U.S. and Cuban officials held a second round of law-enforcement talks last month dedicated partly to the issue.
