BRASÍLIA: Brazil’s interim president Michel Temer was involved in a massive corruption scandal shaking the country’s political establishment and asked for dirty cash diverted from state oil company Petrobras, a key witness said.
The explosive allegations were made by Sergio Machado, the former chief executive of Petrobras subsidiary Transpetro, in a plea deal with prosecutors that could take down yet more big-name politicians in the sweeping scandal.
Machado said Temer personally asked him for money from an illegal kickbacks scheme at Petrobras to fund an ally’s campaign for mayor of Sao Paulo in 2012, according to a prosecution document obtained by Agence France-Presse Wednesday.
The oil executive told prosecutors Temer met with him to ask for “illegal resources from companies that had contracts with Transpetro” to finance the campaign of congressman Gabriel Chalita to the tune of 1.5 million reals ($431,000 at the current exchange rate).

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) -- Brazil's acting President Michel Temer on Wednesday rejected allegations that represented the first direct link between him and the massive corruption probe at state-run oil company Petrobras, denying that he sought campaign funds for his party's mayoral candidate in Sao Paulo as part of a kickback scheme.
Sergio Machado, former head of a state run-oil subsidiary called Transpetro, said in a plea bargain deal made public Wednesday that Temer asked him to channel $400,000 in company funds to 2012 Sao Paulo mayoral candidate, Gabriel Chalita.
At the time, Temer was the country's vice president and a key figure of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party. He became interim president on May 12 after President Dilma Rousseff was suspended for allegedly breaking fiscal laws.
Machado said the payments were channeled through legal campaign donations made by the construction firm Queiroz Galvao, but resulted from Petrobras kickbacks.

Gabriel Chalita paid $ 1 million a digital library never delivered
At the time headed the State Department of Education of São Paulo, Congressman Gabriel Chalita [PMDB-SP] paid $ 1.1 million for a digital library that was never delivered. Almost a decade later, the authorities are still looking for a way to recover the money.
The deal was made in 2004 when Chalita was secretary Geraldo Alckmin [PSDB], became the subject of two parallel investigations into the government. One was sent to the Public Ministry, which clears the losses.
Chalita is also investigated in 11 surveys since October last year when a former employee was the prosecutor to accuse him to collect bribes from companies that sell to the Department of Education. He denies the charges.

Being a United Nations arm, UNESCO can not be processed in Brazil. E-Libro also not, because it is in Miami and has representation in Brazil.
Chalita says the digital library was not forward fault of his successor, Maria Lucia Vasconcelos. UNESCO says that there were technical problems solved in 2006, and also attributes the failure to disinterest the secretariat.
The digital library would allow teachers to read on the computer almost 40,000 works of fiction and non-fiction in English, 4,000 in Spanish and only 400 books in Portuguese.
Secretary of technicians who investigated the purchase concluded that it was unnecessary because the government already had a digital library.
Research indicates that the E-Libro failed to deliver a translation into Portuguese of the program taught to use the system. Technicians have lost more than a year to redo the translation.
The purchase of digital library was authorized by two of the top aides of Chalita, according to research: Paulo Barbosa, his deputy secretary and is now mayor of Santos, and Christina Lamb, head of the Family School.
The investigation showed that there was a hurry. In an e-mail sent at the beginning of the process to a department to examine the proposal, Barbosa wrote: "Below this message the site of E-libro for analysis. We need an immediate response. "
