FORMER Rio State governor Sergio Cabral was arrested yesterday in Brazil’s Car Wash corruption scandal Mr Cabral, an ally of coup President Michel Temer, is accused by police of taking millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for building contracts linked to state oil firm Petrobras.

Mr Cabral is a member of Mr Temer’s scandal-ridden PMDB party, which led the ousting of president Dilma Rousseff this year.

On Wednesday another former Rio governor, Anthony Garotinho, was arrested in a separate investigation.

He is accused of helping to buy votes by fraudulently enrolling people in a poverty reduction program.
