The condor is a hugely important symbol in Ecuador but only 100 remain in the wild.

Huayra, Killary and Churi are the names of three Andean condors reared by humans and released into the wild Friday in the highlands of Ecuador.

The condor is a hugely important symbol in Ecuador and is even featured on the flag and coat of arms. Loss of habitat has led to a decline in their population.

“All this is done in order to extend a helping hand to the bird that is a heraldic symbol of our country and so that future generations know it and to avoid it becoming a symbol that is only preserved in our national coat of arms,” Juan Manuel Carrion from the Condor Group told El Telegrafo.
