Who Fights Colombias Wars?
The biggest opponents of Colombias peace process are the most removed from the reality of war.

The staunch opposition to Colombias peace process has confused many observers abroad. Many dont understand why so many people are so reluctant to any form of settlement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and seemingly willing to allow bloodshed to continue.
Of course, the reason for this is that many Colombians arent affected by the war. In the aftermath of last Octobers plebiscite, in which an initial draft of the peace agreement was rejected, many electoral maps showed that the remote rural areas which saw the heaviest fighting were the most likely to vote yes. Many who voted no did so without having to live with the potential consequences.
But there isnt just a gap between urban and rural Colombians. The nature of the countrys military service also means the working class, wherever they might live, are the ones who suffer most in the war.
. . .
This makes the rampant corruption and class discrimination in the process of conscription all the more appalling. Military service only applies to those who cannot afford to bribe their way out of it. It essentially sacrifices the lives of the poor to protect the interests of the wealthy one of the most obvious effects of the rampant stratification which exists in one of the worlds most unequal countries.
