CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ is the third sanctuary church in Northeast Ohio, shielding a married father of four from deportation to Guatemala.
The Tremont church is housing Eulogio Hernandez Box, who has lived in central Ohio for nearly 20 years. He was reported after a traffic stop. His children are citizens, and he has no criminal background.
Immigration generally doesn't pursue cases in places of worship. Across the country, more churches are opening their doors as a place of safety for undocumented immigrants as a result of an immigration crackdown under President Donald Trump.
"Our Christian faith compels us to love our neighbors and ourselves, and the Good Samaritan parable used by Jesus to illuminate that challenges the modern notion of a neighbor as one born within a shared border and region," Rev. Kelly Burd, pastor for the church, said in a news release.
