An Austrian-American reporter who has been covering Nicaragua’s political upheaval for outlets including the Guardian and the Washington Post has been deported by authorities, his father has confirmed.

Nicaraguan law enforcement officials took Carl David Goette-Luciak from his home in Managua’s Centroamérica neighbourhood on Monday morning, the Guardian understands.

Later that afternoon Goette-Luciak, from Blacksburg in Virginia, was escorted on to a flight from the Nicaraguan capital to San Salvador in El Salvador.

“I talked to him last night. He is fine,” Ilja Luciak, the freelance journalist’s father, told the Guardian on Tuesday. “There wasn’t the chance to talk about his time being interrogated but he was not hurt and he said he was fine … He was absolutely OK.”
