Brazil's Gov't Reviews Decree and Bans Civilians from Carrying Rifles

Brasilia, May 22 (Prensa Latina) The Brazilian government corrected some items and issued on Wednesday a new decree on arms following strong questionings about the possibility that civilians could buy and carry military rifles.

'The decree, let us say, restricts flexibility a bit; there was a criticism that maybe there were some excesses - in the original text, and Planalto - headquarter of the Executive Power, was sensitive to such criticism, 'Minister of Justice and Public Security Sergio Moro told a radio channel.

In a statement, the Government reported that the modified version expressly bans the concession of carrying portable firearms (rifles, carbines, shotguns) to the common citizen, who will only be able to acquire devices of smaller caliber.

The note adds that only rural owners will be able to acquire such kind of long arms and keep them in their homes.
