Tell the UN to respect human rights in Haiti

On Human Rights Day Tell the UN to Respect Human Rights in Haiti

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has launched a “Celebrate Human Rights” campaign to commemorate the December 10 anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

The best way to celebrate this day is to ask the UN to follow through on its own responsibility to the people of Haiti for a massive cholera epidemic that was caused by the negligence of the UN itself. A UN report confirmed that “overwhelming evidence” points to its militarized MINUSTAH peacekeeping forces as the source of a cholera epidemic, caused by allowing raw sewage to flow into Haiti’s largest river system. The epidemic has killed 7,000 people and sickened another 500,000.

The UN refuses to accept responsibility for the epidemic and also refuses to allow the cholera victims to challenge this legal claim in a fair, impartial tribunal.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay could be a great advocate for cholera victims. She has made a career of courageously and successfully standing up for victims of human rights violations and calls her Commission "the voice of the victim everywhere."

A fact-finding delegation organized by School of the Americas Watch (SOA Watch) was on the ground in Haiti in October 2011 to investigate the current human rights situation. The delegation found grave concerns by Haitians regarding MINUSTAH, a militarized UN "peacekeeping" force consisting of 13,000 military and police forces. Take one minute to celebrate Human Right Day by asking Commissioner Pillay to show her commitment to human rights, especially when the UN itself has violated those rights of the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.
