Fossils of a turtle the size of a car have been unearthed in what is now northern South America.
The turtle - Stupendemys geographicus - is believed to have roamed the region between 13 and 7 million years ago.
The fossils were found in Colombia's Tatacoa Desert and Venezuela's Urumaco region.
The first Stupendemys fossils were discovered in the 1970s but many mysteries have remained about the 4-metre long animal.
It was about the size and weight of a saloon car and inhabited a huge wetland across northern South America before the Amazon and Orinoco rivers were formed.

(69 posts)We know so little about our planet and all the amazing things that have and still live on it. Even with all we know, it is a tiny drop in the bucket of what there is to know. We just dont know yet all there is to know. I am glad we keep learning and trying to close the gap.

(160,515 posts)There are so few who are led by their inner character to look beneath the surface for more information and for the deeper meaning lying below the manipulated public perceptions.
Of course there are others who recognize that it truly WOULD take longer than 6,000 years to form a planet and the incredible complexity of life forms around us everywhere.
Access to computers allows those who care so much to learn which also would take so much longer at our own speeds. It looks as if discovery is being accelerated in ways that can allow people to catch up to what would have taken forever to find out earlier.
The very idea of a turtle as large as the one found in Colombia is overwhelming. It would be wonderful if someone simply did a replica for people to be able to ponder. Have learned there was also a unbelievably large snake fossil also found in Colombia. Here's a link to a photo of a replica:
