GEORGETOWN (Reuters) - Guyana opposition leader Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday accused the nations elections commission of fraud in tallying the results of Mondays presidential vote, saying the group inflated the vote count to favor the incumbent, President David Granger.
The South American nation this week held an election to choose who will oversee an oil boom set to transform the former British colony, which faces a test of whether it can sustainably manage a sudden influx of natural resource wealth.
Jagdeo said the Guyana Elections Commission altered the vote count in a populous area known as Region Four.
This is thievery, this is totally fake, Jagdeo told reporters. We cannot take this sitting down. This is not a banana republic.
The commission released a tally sheet for Region Four that showed Grangers APNU-AFC coalition beating Irfaan Ali of the opposition PPP party by a wide margin.
