RIO DE JANEIRO/GENEVA (Reuters) - Brazil reached more than a million confirmed coronavirus cases and 50,000 deaths over the weekend as throngs of people swarmed Rio de Janeiro beaches, but the World Health Organization said on Monday that even more cases were likely going uncounted.
On Sunday, swimmers and sunbathers packed Rios famous beaches, with many neither wearing masks nor respecting the WHOs guidance to maintain 1 meter, or 3 feet, of distance between people.
As the toll climbs in Rio, the state with the second highest number of novel coronavirus cases, the local health secretary said on Monday he would resign after about month in office.
I have only one thing to say: I tried, state health secretary Fernando Ferry said in a video on Brazilian broadcaster TV Globo, announcing his departure.

I was planning a possible trip to Sao Paulo, just to explore possible retirement expatration options nearby.
That plan is on hold indefinitely, I wouldn't even want to seal myself in a tin can for a puddle jump to Las Vegas right now, aside from any extended flight.
Aside from the defiant noncompliant, probably believing Jair Bolsonaro's fake media BS?
Sometimes I wonder, every time I make a plan some evil, selfish, authoritarian and greedy politicians take the wrecking ball, indirectly to that, from RayGun on.
