Ex-President Fernando Lugo announces Senate run
The Associated Press

ASUNCION, Paraguay -- Former Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo has announced he's running for the senate.

Paraguay's senators voted Lugo out of office for "poor performance" last June, but now he wants to join them as one of several candidates from a leftist coalition.

The 61-year-old Lugo challenged his impeachment and even formed a parallel cabinet, urging Paraguayans to resist the replacement government formed by his vice president, Federico Franco.

But that parallel cabinet dissolved within weeks. Now it seems that Lugo's promise to retire and write his memoirs didn't hold either.

The April 21 elections will be watched by international observers sent by the Organization of American States to vouch for their legitimacy.
