Thousands take to Chile streets to mark protest movement anniversary

Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered Sunday in a central Santiago square to mark the anniversary of a protest movement that broke out last year demanding greater equality in Chile.

The demonstration comes just a week before Chileans vote in a referendum on whether to replace the dictatorship-era constitution -- one of the key demands when the protest movement began on October 18, 2019.

Protests broke out a year ago initially as a response to a hike in metro fares, before mushrooming into a general demonstration against inequality and the government of President Sebastián Piñera.

Protesters torch the San Francisco de Borja church in Santiago, Chile, during protests held today on the first anniversary of the country's massive, pro-constitutional reform demonstrations.

The church belongs to the Carabineros military police, whose policy of deliberately aiming for protesters' eyes has blinded over 400.

same outfit which kidnapped, tortured, and sadistically murdered so many of their parents' and grandparents' generation for protesting the US-directed (Richard M. Nixon) coup, installment of General Augusto Pinochet, and disappearance of so many Chileans.

So much suffering delivered to these young people in one year from President Piñera's directives. (You may recall Sebastián Piñera's brother, José Piñera, was Pinochet's scheming ministers:

Echenique (born October 6, 1948) is a Chilean economist, one of the famous Chicago Boys, who served as minister of Labor and Social Security, and of Mining, in the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. He is the architect of Chile's private pension system based on personal retirement accounts.

Hope these courageous progressive students will be successful, after all.

Must wish them the best of luck, Their cause is worthy, clearly, and should be addressed as soon as possible, with a permanent solution.

Their constitution was created by monsters, after all.

Thanks for the article, sandensea.
