The former Minister of Government of the de facto coup regime in Bolivia, Arturo Murillo, and his former vice-minister Javier Issa, pursued by the justice system, are today in the United States, confirmed the commander of the Bolivian Police, Jhonny Aguilera.

"We know through various notifications that the former authorities are in the United States; we do not know their status or the activities they are carrying out," declared the colonel.

The police chief also added Sergio Sonte, who served as Murillo's chief of staff and was also involved in the irregular purchases of tear gas, to the list in United States territory.

Aguilera pointed out that they do not know the immigration status of these members of the coup government led by Jeanine Áñez, who have found refuge on U.S. soil.

Murillo and former Defense Minister Fernando López are implicated in the case of the purchase, with alleged overpricing, of tear gas for an estimated value of two million dollars.

For its part, the public prosecutor's office issued an order against Issa for the theft and supposed burning of the military service book of the former president and leader of the Movement Towards Socialism, Evo Morales.

If you'll recall, previous Bolivian President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, educated in the US, who had his military mow down protesting Native Bolivians, ran to the US, too, to hide from justice.

Bolivia to Extradite, Try Ex-President Lozada for 2003 Massacre

Bolivia's Minister of the President said the decision is an "important step" towards justice for the 60 people killed and hundreds injured.
The Bolivian government has ordered the extradition of former President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada and his former Minister of Defense Carlos Sanchez from the United States to face trial in Bolivia.

"To complete justice, it is necessary that Sanchez de Lozada and Sanchez Berzain, previously sentenced, be extradited to our country to be presented before Bolivia's justice system," Minister of the President Alfredo Rada said in a Wednesday press conference.

Sanchez de Lozada, known as 'Goni,' is charged with at least 60 deaths and 400 injuries on October 11, 2003, when his government dispatched military units to "protect private property" during Bolivia's gas wars. When protesters tried to block the gas convoys, witnesses say soldiers began to shoot indiscriminately.

'Goni,' along with five other former military leaders, was found guilty in 2011. Although the government immediately requested extradition, the U.S. Department of State had denied the requests until yesterday, when a case between victims of the families and the Court of Fort Lauderdale in Florida ruled in favor of the victims.

Goni was a Bolivian Legislative leader when I served at our Embassy in La Paz from 1984-86. Because of his fluent English and US education, which was very rare for Bolivian politicians in those days, he was a good source of information for us.
