Former president tells CNN he seeks G20 meeting to discuss distribution of vaccines to poorer countries

Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said he is asking the President of the United States, Joe Biden, for an emergency G20 meeting to discuss the distribution of vaccines against Covid-19 to Brazil and poorer countries.

He expressed this desire to journalist Christiane Amanpour, from CNN Internacional, in an interview that had excerpts released on Wednesday (17). The full text will be shown on Thursday (18).

"I am aware that the United States has extra vaccines and that they will not use all of this vaccine. And that vaccine, who knows, could be donated to Brazil, or to other countries, even poorer ones, that can not afford it," said Lula.

Lula said that he does not trust the government of President Jair Bolsonaro to lead this international effort for vaccination, praised Biden and also made clear his intention to run for president in 2022.

"If my party and the other allied parties understand that I can be the candidate, and if I am in good health, I assure you that I will not deny the invitation."
