Is Colombia trying to silence key witness against Uribe?
by Adriaan Alsema April 14, 2021
Colombias prison chief asked the Supreme Court to revoke an order to ramp up security for one of the surviving witnesses of former President Alvaro Uribes alleged terrorist activity.
In a letter, Major General Mariano Botero of prison authority INPEC asked the court to reconsider the April 2018 order to transfer former paramilitary fighter Juan Guillermo Monsalve to a secure wing of Bogota prison La Picota.
Two good reasons to silence Monsalve
The former member of paramilitary group Bloque Metro is a key witness in ongoing criminal investigations into Uribes alleged witness tampering practices.
Monsalve and other former members of the Bloque Metro have additionally testified that the former president helped found their paramilitary group when Uribe was governor of Antioquia in the 1990s.
