Socialist candidate Pedro Castillo regained ground in voting intentions and slightly increased his lead over conservative Keiko Fujimori almost two weeks before the presidential election in Peru, a poll showed on Friday.
Castillo, an elementary school teacher seeking to implement new taxes and royalties on the mining sector, obtained 44.9%, according to a Datum poll published by the newspaper Gestion. The result marked a 2.5 percentage point improvement over his performance in the previous poll by the same company.
Fujimori, daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, who is in jail for human rights abuses and corruption, had 40.1% support in the poll, marking an increase of 0.1%, according to the survey of about 1,200 people conducted May 18-20.
The market did not like the poll result, traders said, as the local sol currency weakened 0.92% Friday morning. The local stock market (.SPBLPSPT) meanwhile fell for than 3%.

Pedro Castillo, presidential candidate for the Peru Libre party, speaks during a campaign rally in Piura, Peru, on Tuesday, April 27, 2021. Peruvian markets, considered one of the safest bets in Latin America, are coming under fire as former school teacher Castillo, whose party has praised leftists such as Hugo Chavez, is ahead in presidential polls. , Bloomberg
(Bloomberg) -- Perus Pedro Castillo consolidated his lead in a new election poll released on Friday over Keiko Fujimori as the left wing educator looks to secure the presidency in a runoff on June 6.
In a vote simulation done by polling company Datum, Castillo received 45.5% compared with 40.1% for Fujimori, according to the data published in newspaper Gestion. That compares with a previous Datum simulation that had the difference at a more narrow 3.6 percentage points.
Voter intention, a slightly different gauge, had Castillo at 44.9% against 40.1% for Fujimori with 9.2% planning to spoil their ballot and 5.8% undecided, according to Datum. The poll surveyed 1,201 people between May 18 and 20 with a margin of error of 2.8%.
Peruvian markets have been whipsawed since the surprise first round vote in April that saw Castillo emerge from near obscurity to handily beat a crowded field of candidates. Fujimori, who has unsuccessfully sought the presidency in the two previous elections, is trying to claw back terrain after initially trailing by some 20 percentage points in polls.
