Two heads, other human remains left at Mexico polling station in Tijuana

Two heads and other human remains were left at polling stations in the Mexican border city of Tijuana during elections on Sunday, authorities reported.

An hour after elections got underway, a man hurled a head at one polling station, interrupting the vote as the police were called, prosecutors in the state of Baja California said.

A couple of hours later, at another polling station in the same area, a man left another head and dismembered human remains inside a wooden box placed next to the ballot boxes.

More human remains were discovered in bags near a third polling station, according to the Baja California Prosecutor’s Office.

The elections have been marred by a wave of political violence that has seen more than 90 politicians murdered since the electoral process began in September.

1. Severed head, body parts, kidnappings: Mexico's bloody elections

Mexico City: A man lobbed a severed human head at a voting station in the border city of Tijuana and plastic bags filled with body parts were found nearby, authorities said, as Mexicans voted in the country’s largest elections in history.

Authorities said the man ran away, but they did not specify whether he was captured. They said they found plastic bags with human remains and severed hands in the area.

It was not immediately clear what message the gruesome act was meant to send and how it related to the election held on Sunday (Monday AEST).

The campaign for MPs and state authorities has been one of the bloodiest in recent history. Security consultancy Etellekt said 97 politicians had been killed and 935 attacked.

Elsewhere on voting day, someone threw an inactive grenade into a voting station in Mexico state, authorities said. One voter, who asked not to be named, said the crowd dispersed but then returned.

“People said that they would vote, and that they would not be intimidated,” the woman said, adding that she had cast her ballot. “It was ugly.”
