In a tight vote on Thursday (17), the Federal Senate approved a provisional measure that paves the way for the privatization of Eletrobras. With 42 votes in favor and 37 against, the government, especially Minister Paulo Guedes (Economy), won a victory in Congress. But to achieve this win, the proposal had to conform to several changes.

With the support of parties from the government base, the sale of the state-owned company advances after a session that lasted almost ten hours. The subject has dragged on in Congress since the government of then-President Michel Temer (MDB).

The text now goes to Congress, which had already approved the proposal at the end of May. According to the congressional leader, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), the appraisal should take place the following Monday (21). This will be necessary because, as the Senate changed the text, deputies will evaluate the new version. If approved in the House, the text will go to sanction.

The text needs to be approved by Congress by Tuesday (22) in order to not lose its validity. The opposition to the government announced its intention to appeal to the STF (Supreme Federal Court) to try to stop the privatization.
