Brazilian governor and presidential hopeful Eduardo Leite comes out as gay

A prominent Brazilian politician — and potentially a major party presidential candidate — has come out as gay.

Eduardo Leite, the governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, made the announcement on Thursday night during an interview on Rede Globo, one of the country’s top broadcasters.

“I have never spoken about a subject related to my private life,” the 36-year-old center-right politician said.

“But during this moment of low integrity in Brazil, I have nothing to hide, I am gay,” he added. “I’m a governor who is gay rather than a gay governor. Just as Obama in the United States wasn’t a Black president, but a president who was Black. And I’m proud of this.”
