Argentina wins Copa America soccer championship over Brazil

Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 to win the Copa América, its first major title since 1993 and the first major international crown for captain Lionel Messi.

The win at Rio de Janeiro's Maracanã Stadium adds an international accolade to Messi's CV, after having won a numerous trophies at club level with Barcelona.

It was an entertaining but hard fought match on both sides as Messi squared off against former Barca teammate Neymar, who was fouled repeatedly throughout the night.

Midfielder Ángel Di María gave Argentina the lead and eventual game-winner in the 22nd minute when he pounced on Rodan Lodi's errant clearance and looped the ball over Ederson for the goal.

This was Argentina's first Copa América (American Cup) since 1993, when they edged out Mexico 2-1.

But the real star on the Argentine side may have been Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez - the goalkeeper.

He blocked a number of possible Brazilian goals - who got more shots in than Argentina, in fact.

In any case, both teams lived up to their mighty reputations in the world of soccer - and of course, for President Alberto Fernández this was very welcome news indeed.

The joke going around in Argentina is that Clarín is having an awful dilemma: whether to downplay the fact that Argentina won (using their typical back-handed compliments); or egg the public on the celebrate in the streets - as this might create more Covid cases.

Qué será.

Let's hope that President Fernandez doesn't mess it up by insulting the Brazilians like he did two weeks ago.
