Brazil gets snow and ice, surprising residents

While many people were pleasantly surprised, farmers in more central regions feared the worst for valuable crops. Most of the snow was recorded in mountainous areas.

Freezing temperatures hit areas of Brazil, like the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul

Brazilians braced themselves for the coldest day of the year on Friday after some locals in southern regions saw snow for the first time.

Over 40 cities in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul reported ice, with 33 even getting snow on Thursday, up to a meter high in some places, according to weather specialists Somar Meteorologia.

While it gave some people the possibility of making their first snowmen, fears have grown that essential export crops like coffee, sugar cane and oranges could be damaged by frost.

What caused these freezing temperatures?
Polar air pushed through to the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul on Thursday and Friday, bringing subzero temperatures to higher altitude towns and cities.

Brazil has experienced rare heavy snowfall since Thursday, threatening crops and bewildering locals who don’t usually see snow.

More than 40 cities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul had icy conditions and at least 33 municipalities had snow, reported the meteorology company Somar Meteorologia.

On Friday, there were warnings of cold temperatures as a polar air mass travelled toward the centre-south of the agricultural powerhouse, threatening coffee, sugarcane and orange crops with frost.

The unusually cold temperature in the country has already forced coffee prices to rise.

Cars, streets and highways were this week covered in ice while people took the opportunity to take pictures and play in the snow, building snowmen.
