First came a quake in Mexico - then strange blue lights

Mexicans are sharing spectacular videos of bursts of blue lights seen streaking across the skies as a strong earthquake rocked the country's Pacific coast city of Acapulco on Wednesday.

The 7.0 magnitude quake struck some 11 miles northeast of the resort city in the southwestern state of Guerrero.

At least one person was killed, buildings were damaged and rockslides littered a major highway - but the temblor didn't cause widespread damage.

Felt some 200 hundred miles away in Mexico City, and lasting nearly a minute, residents fled into the streets as buildings swayed, sidewalks undulated and the blue lights burst brilliantly in the sky.

2. Just rewatched the shocking blue lights extending completely across the horizon.

It's just as horrendous tonight as it was yesterday.

I don't think many people are aware that the energy released by earthquakes could do something like that, just as no one has ever imagined wildfires can become so intense they create fire tornadoes, or that volcanoes can create tornadoes, as well:

The sight of a volcanic tornado has been captured on camera over a fissure at the foot of an erupting volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island.

The rare phenomenon came as lava from Kilauea destroyed hundreds more homes overnight, overtaking two oceanfront communities advised to evacuate last week.

The “lavanado” – which does not have an official name among volcanologists – was captured by photographer Anthony Quintano during a tour by the Hawaii National Guard of an area known as Leilani Estates.

As frightening as fire tornadoes are, blue lights caused by earthquakes seem far more terrifying to me.
