The San Cristóbal hill, an emblematic place in the city of Lima, will become a gigantic artistic mural of more than 300 thousand square meters that can be seen from different points of the capital. This initiative, carried out with the support of the Municipality of Lima, is part of the actions carried out by the Qroma Rainbow Project on the occasion of the bicentennial.

This monumental work of beautification of the city is more than 50 percent complete and is in charge of a group of Peruvian muralists who are embellishing the facades of the houses of the Leticia Human Settlement, turning them into a large mural. The contribution is from the Arcoíris Project of Qroma, a company of the Breca Group that has carried out similar works in the El Porvenir square and the Monserrate neighborhood.

The gigantic mural will represent immense Chakanas that will connote the connection of the San Cristóbal hill community as part of a purpose of collective growth and prosperity. This symbolism represents the cultural heritage and identity of the residents of the area and its purpose is to highlight the union through color.

“Our Arcoíris project arrives this year at the San Cristóbal hill thanks to the artistic collective Color Energía y Aporta, Breca's social impact platform, as well as with the support of the Municipality of Lima. This intervention consists of the creation of a large macro mural and 15 murals in the Leticia neighborhood, bringing art and color through painting to the San Cristóbal hill, commemorating our 200 years of independence,” said Arianna Macchiavello, Corporate Affairs Manager of Qroma.

More than 10,000 residents of Leticia will benefit directly from the painting of their facades. Their homes will be part of the first macro mural in their neighborhood, which can be seen from the Parque de la Muralla, the Alameda Chabuca Granda and other parts of the city.

“This monumental artistic intervention adds to the tourist revaluation of our city. It will make the San Cristóbal hill visible as a relevant historical point and a tourist attraction in Lima. As part of our municipal Tourist Neighborhoods strategy, we have designed pedestrian routes that accompany the murals so that visitors can access them. Macro murals of this type allow to increase tourist offer and boost the economy of small local businesses, as is the case in Medellin, Mexico City and La Paz”, said María Paz Ramos, Deputy Manager of Tourism of the Municipality of Lima.

The Qroma Rainbow Project has recovered different spaces in Lima thanks to these murals. The painting helps to modify behaviors based on the promotion of a sense of pride and belonging through the stories that the murals tell.

Lima, Feb 8 (EFE).- More than 1,000 homes on Cerro San Cristobal are part of the largest urban mural in Latin America, a project that has brought hope and a sense of community spirit for one of the poorest areas of the Peruvian capital.

Known for the panoramic views offered by its vantage point overlooking the city from an altitude of 409 m (1,340 ft), San Cristobal now has people looking up from Lima’s historic core.

The mural, which covers 320,000 sq m (3.4 million sq ft) of facades in the Leticia shantytown, is a riot of colors featuring the traditional stepped, four-cornered Incan cross known as the chakana.

“I believe that the shared experience of each resident is what gives sense to everything,” the artist behind the initiative, Carla Magan, commented to Efe.

“Before the conquest Lima was occupy by millennial civilizations and in this era we want to highlight our ancestral identity,” he told Efe. EFE pbc/dr

Rainbow colours are splashed across small houses in a once grey neighbourhood of Peru’s capital city, creating the optical illusion of a giant mural across San Cristobal hill which can be seen from various vantage points across Lima.

The project in Lima’s Leticia neighborhood started five months ago and is being headed by muralists Carla Magan and Daniel Manrique. The effort aims to improve the lives of those in the COVID-hit community and promoting tourism.

“This hill was considered an unsafe area in the city. It was said that this neighbourhood was dangerous,” said Manrique. “We decided to change that social stigma through art.
