This morning around 11 AM, the son of the Juan Lara Mendoza, mayor of the city of Villagrán, Guanajuato and another woman were attacked and shot while driving. Photos show the unidentified woman red wearing Municipal employee clothing. Witnesses at the scene identified the man shot as Florencio Lara, son of the mayor.

The mayor's son was rushed to the hospital, but according to Periodico Correo, has died. State public security forces as well as Villagrán police secured the area and have begun investigating the scene.

According to reporting by Periodico Correo, neither the mayor nor his family had previously received threats.

Mexico Homicides Remained at High Levels Despite Pandemic
The most authoritative count of homicides in Mexico shows that killings remain essentially unchanged at 36,579 in 2020.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The most authoritative count of homicides in Mexico was published Tuesday and it shows killings remain essentially unchanged at 36,579 in 2020.

Even though the coronavirus pandemic reduced many activities in Mexico in 2020, the number of killings was essentially equal to the 36,661 that occurred in 2019.

Security expert Alejandro Hope say the preliminary numbers released Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute are likely to be revised upward by between 1% to 3% when definitive figures are published in October.

. . .

Experts say much of the violence is fueled by a series of turf battles being fought across the nation between the Jalisco and Sinaloa cartels, often allied with or acting through local gangs.
