4 in 10 Brazilians Think Bolsonaro Encourages Illegality in the Amazon

Assessment is that the president encourages rather than fights crimes

Jun.27.2022 12:12PM

Approximately 4 out of 10 Brazilians think that Jair Bolsonaro's government (PL) encourages rather than fights Amazon illegalities. That includes issues like illegal hunting and fishing, the invasion of indigenous lands, deforestation, and clandestine mining — issues highlighted by the murders of indigenous expert Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips.

A Datafolha survey carried out on Wednesday (22) and Thursday (23) showed that between 39% and 43% of the population sees the current president as a policy more of stimulus than of confronting problems. Bolsonaro's administration has been criticized for dismantling government organizations and its lack of action in the region.

On the other hand, a percentage ranging from 31% to 35% support the opposite. About 3 out of 10 people think that the government is fighting rather than encouraging crime in the Amazon territory in general and in indigenous communities.

The neutral portion, those who say Bolsonaro does not encourage or repress crimes, ranges from 8% to 10%. Those who do not have an opinion on the topics correspond to something between 13% and 18%.
